“Texas faces more threats today than at any other time in our lives — and some of those threats are right down the street or on the other side of a computer screen,” said Homeland Security Division Chief Gerald Brown. “It’s more important than ever that we stay educated and remind ourselves to be vigilant in the face of potential danger. That’s why, for the next 30 days, the department is focusing on ways Texans – like you – can help us make this state safer for every family.”

The campaign highlights specific safety tips and advisories from Texas DPS, including:

  • Safely store your firearms in a locked cabinet or safe.
    • Practicing safe gun storage “protects our kids, prevents accidents and keeps guns out of the hands of criminals,” according to Texas DPS. Safe storage options and checklists can be found here.
  • Have a plan in place for your family, pets and home ahead of significant weather threats.
  • Know the dangers of fentanyl.
    • Texas DPS said people who experience fentanyl poisoning “often don’t know that a pill or substance they bought online or received at a party is laced with the deadly drug.” Texas DPS further promoted the ongoing “One Pill Kills” campaign.
  • Recognize the signs of online scams and know the tactics used by hackers to access personal information or bank accounts.
    • Identifying phishing emails, fake ads or other malicious content can help prevent identity and monetary theft.
  • Download the iWatchTexas app and report any suspicious activity in schools and communities.
    • According to Texas DPS, reports submitted through iWatchTexas may help law enforcement “stop life-threatening attacks before they even happen.”

Previously, Texas DPS highlighted “Keeping Texas Roads Safe‘ and “Keeping Texas Communities Safe” as 30-day themes amid the “90 Days of Safety” campaign. It also re-launched its statewide coloring book program with an activity book titled “Keeping Texas Safe,” which officials said will be distributed to officers within its Safety Education Service and made available in the fall…
