AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) —Hispanic Heritage can be seen in many things, whether it be music, food, art, dancing, and so much more. An important part of Hispanic Heritage also includes the tamale. The Library of Congress notes that while the origin of the tamale can be traced back to the Aztecs or Mayan lineage, it’s been around for a very long time. They also note that more than three dozen different types of tamales are listed in historic works describing the people and culture of central Mexico.
While masa recipes may differ, or arguments over the best meat to put in, to what the tamale is wrapped in, tamales play an important part of Hispanic Heritage from the oldest of generations to the youngest.
We had the pleasure of hosting Lori Villarreal from Tamale Time in our studio to talk about the importance of the tamale not only in her business, but her life growing up. She also graciously walked Andy Justus and Mari Ferrel through her process of making tamales (which the whole team confirmed are delicious)…
