Panhandle Weather Update: 80–95% Rain Chances Thursday, Low Flash Flood Risk

Amarillo, TX – Widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected across the Texas Panhandle beginning late Wednesday and continuing through early Friday, with the heaviest rainfall likely on Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, multiple rounds of showers and storms are forecast from 6 p.m. Wednesday through 6 a.m. Friday, although rainfall may come in waves rather than continuous downpours. The most intense rainfall is expected Thursday, when rain chances range from 70–95% across much of the region.

Cities including Dumas, Gruver, Perryton, Borger, Pampa, Vega, Amarillo, and Claude will see elevated rain odds, with the highest probabilities—up to 95%—south and east of Amarillo Thursday afternoon and evening. Some storms may produce small hail and lightning, particularly during the daytime hours.

Forecasters say there is a very low chance for localized flash flooding, primarily in the eastern and central Texas Panhandle, where models show a 30–60% chance of at least one inch of rain. The risk remains low due to the expected scattered nature of the heaviest downpours…
