Amarillo crime drops 11.5% in 2024, but challenges remain

AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — The Amarillo Police Department has released its annual crime report, revealing an 11.5% decrease in overall crime for 2024.

Interim Police Chief Jimmy Johnson attributed the decline to a national trend and the department’s increased use of technology.

“Part of it is a national trend of crime trending down across the United States. It’s been going on for several years now,” Johnson said. “But we have started a focused effort on our own, utilizing technology much more than we have in the past.”…
