AISD calls special meeting to decide school calendar, health insurance

The Amarillo Independent School District Board of Trustees held a special meeting Monday evening to discuss the 2026-2027 District Calendar and also to go over insurance rates for the district.

AISD Deputy Superintendent Kevin Phillips told the board that they had looked at 21 different calendars before making a decision on one. According to Phillips, the new calendar provides for 175 instructional days and exceeds requirements for the number of minutes in the school year. In addition, the 175 instructional days will allow the district to pursue additional student intervention and corresponding funding through the additional day school year, known as AE, offered by the Agency of the State of Texas.

The calendar also provided for 187 teacher contractional days with meetings on Nov. 11, 18, 20, 21 and Dec. 2, 9, and 12, 2026. Input from stakeholders, calendar requirements, instructional needs, training needs and testing schedules were considered before making a final recommendation…
