AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The Amarillo Fire Department said it is reflecting on a year of progress focused on strengthening public safety and preparedness as 2025 comes to a close.
“So much of the work our firefighters and support staff do happens behind the scenes,” Fire Chief Jason Mays said. “That preparation ensures we’re ready when it matters most.”

As part of that effort, officials said the department is pursuing a Class 1 rating through the Insurance Services Office Public Protection Classification program in partnership with the Amarillo Emergency Communications Center and the city’s Water Distribution Department.
The ISO program evaluates fire protection capabilities, including emergency communications, staffing, training, apparatus, water supply reliability and community risk reduction programs.
