From dropout to degree, Layton inspires at AC commencement

A transformational journey nearly two decades in the making came full circle Friday night as Amarillo College honored more than 1,100 summer and fall graduates at the Amarillo Civic Center.

Alexia Layton, a 36-year-old Early Childhood Development student and single mother of two, served as student speaker during the Fall 2025 Commencement Ceremony on Dec. 19 — a moment she said still feels surreal.

“Pure shock,” Layton said of learning she had been chosen. “I never thought I would go to college, much less graduate, much less be the speaker.”…
