Amarillo Fire Department responds to Thursday home attic fire, issues safety reminder

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – The Amarillo Fire Department released information on a single-story house fire that sparked Thursday afternoon in the 2000 block of South Lipscomb Street, and issued a safety reminder for community members.

The department said crews responded to a home at around 3:34 p.m. Thursday in the 2000 block of South Lipscomb Street, and saw brown smoke showing from the side of the home and venting through an aluminum turbine ventilator; a roof vent often used to help draw hot air out of attic spaces by spinning in the wind.

Crews confirmed smoke conditions near the chimney and eaves of the home, according to the department, and found fire in the attic near the fireplace area. Crews pulled in the ceiling in adjacent rooms to check for fire extension and to cool several hot spots with water and foam.

After the fire was extinguished and the home was cooled, crews completed salvage and overhaul and the Red Cross was contacted.
