Extreme cold warnings continue until 12 p.m. Monday

AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — Dangerous cold will continue to grip the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles through the weekend, with Extreme Cold Warnings and Cold Weather Advisories in effect until noon Monday.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will fall near or below zero tonight across much of the region. Some communities, especially in the southern Panhandle and eastern New Mexico, are expected to drop several degrees below zero by Monday morning. Record low temperatures will be possible.

Wind chills will become increasingly hazardous shortly after sunset, with values plunging to 15 to 20 degrees below zero overnight and remaining below zero through Monday morning.

An Extreme Cold Warning is in effect for the southern Texas Panhandle and portions of eastern New Mexico, including areas near Hereford, Tulia, Silverton, Dimmitt, Clovis and Portales, where the coldest temperatures and most dangerous wind chills are expected.

Farther north, including Amarillo, Borger, Dumas, Dalhart and Pampa, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in place. While air temperatures may be slightly higher than locations farther south, wind chills in these areas will still fall well below zero, creating dangerous conditions for anyone outdoors during the overnight hours…
