Critical fire weather expected across Panhandles Monday afternoon

AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — Warm temperatures, dry air and strong winds could allow fires to spread quickly across the southern High Plains on Monday afternoon creating a dangerous setup for rapid fire growth across the southern High Plains.

Temperatures are expected to climb into the 70s across the Texas Panhandle, Oklahoma Panhandle and eastern New Mexico, drying out vegetation and increasing the risk for wildfires. Wind gusts of up to 35 mph are expected out of the southwest, with higher gusts approaching 40 mph possible across the northwest portions of the Panhandles.
