AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Shoes tied, water bottles ready, and big smiles at the starting line. Mesa Verde Elementary’s running club is turning exercise into excitement for students.
“The running club started a couple of years ago,” Michael Renteria, Mesa Verde Elementary School interventionist, said. “We got the idea in Spring 24. Janice went to see her dad run in a race, and she came to me and said let’s do this for our kids. The students run their miles around the school property. They do two laps. It equals a mile. We have it measured off. So our goal when we first started off was try to get two miles a day. After the kids got the hang of it, they did two miles. Then, we were pushing for three miles. We had kids running four and a half miles.”
What started as a simple after-school activity has quickly become a favorite part of the week for the students at Mesa Verde Elementary School. This spring, the Mesa Verde Running Club began its third year…
