High winds and dry conditions prompted the National Weather Service to issue warnings about potential fire dangers this week across parts of far West Texas, southern and eastern New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle.
A handful of fires broke out north of Midland, the closest of which in the warning area was in Plainview, where the Arbor fire burned 127 acres on Tuesday. The Lavender and 8 Ball fires — which are northwest and southeast of Amarillo, respectively — have each burned about 9,000 acres, according to Texas A&M Forest Service data.
