Texas Panhandle Cities Smash Long-Standing Heat Records

Let’s just call it for what it is…winter hasn’t really been winter in Amarillo. Now, am I complaining about that? No, not even a bit. I’m not a cold-weather person, so a mild winter is 100% my speed. It’s why when I retire, Arizona or Florida is calling my name.

However, this winter here has felt EXTREMELY mild. I mean to the point where there were days I was ready to break the shorts out and spend the day outside. Here we are at the end of February, and we’re getting 80-degree days.

Record-Breaking Days

This week, we’re breaking records all over the Texas Panhandle for warmest temps per day. Three panhandle cities broke records yesterday alone, and one of them was a record of over 100 years old. THAT is how warm it’s been this week.

Dalhart beat its previous record of 77 set in 1986 by nine degrees. Borger reset their record from just last year by eight degrees. Amarillo? I’m glad you asked. We set our record of 81 degrees all the way back in 1918, over 100 years ago. That record has now been beaten. We checked in at 86 degrees yesterday.

One Of The Warmest Winters Ever

It doesn’t stop with just a day or a week. This entire winter has been the warmest on record, and we can definitely feel it. Taking a look at the average temperatures from December 1 through February 23, it was 1907 and 1934 when we had our warmest winters ever. Those years checked in with an average temp of 58.1 degrees…
