Panhandle teen arrested after gun report prompts school lockdown, chase

A juvenile in Moore County was taken to an Amarillo hospital Thursday after a report of a stolen firearm put schools on alert and ended in a police pursuit and crash, authorities said.

The Moore County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were sent to a residence in Moore County on Thursday, Feb. 26, in reference to a 14-year-old juvenile runaway who had possibly stolen a firearm from a family member. After speaking with Dumas ISD officials, it was decided to place area schools on a secure status out of an abundance of caution.

The sheriff’s office said deputies canvassed the area in attempt to find the juvenile. While searching the area, deputies found the missing firearm in a nearby outbuilding. At short time later, a Dumas ISD police officer saw a juvenile running in the area of the Dumas Business Park. Authorities said they then found that the juvenile had stolen a vehicle from the area…
