Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Amarillo professor recognized for blood-brain barrier research

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center officials announced Dr. Ulrich Bickel, pharmaceutical sciences professor and associate dean for sciences at its Jerry H. Hodge School of Pharmacy in Amarillo, was awarded by the Texas Tech University System on Thursday for his research accomplishments.

On Thursday, the 2026 Chancellor’s Council Distinguished Teaching and Research Awards were presented by TTU System Chancellor Brandon Creighton, TTUHSC President Dr. Lori Rice-Spearman, and TTUHSC Provost and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Darrin D’Agostino.

According to TTUHSC, the awards are the most prestigious granted to faculty throughout the TTU System, and recognize academic excellence.

“These honorees represent the engine driving the future of health care in Texas,” said Creighton, “Through their dedication to teaching, research and patient care, they are preparing the next generation of physicians and health professionals while advancing the medical breakthroughs that will improve and save lives for decades to come. That kind of excellence does not happen by accident – it reflects the best of Texas higher education. I also want to commend Dr. Rice-Spearman and Provost D’Agostino for their leadership at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.”
