Amarillo Police Department warns community members of scam traffic toll text

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – The Amarillo Police Department issued an advisory Monday about reported scam text messages in which community members have been falsely told they need to resolve an unpaid traffic toll.

According to the department, the messages may include a template that may look like an official court summons with a court seal, case number, and a QR code. The messages may also warn community members could face serious consequences, such as fines or an arrest, if the alleged toll is not paid right away.

“Don’t fall for it,” said the department in its Monday advisory. “These messages are being sent by scammers. The QR code will take you to a fake website designed to steal your financial information and money.”

The department reminded community members of multiple tips that can be used to help avoid scams, including:

  • Legitimate legal documents are typically sent by mail or delivered in person, not through text message.
  • QR codes can be just as dangerous as suspicious links, and you should not scan one from an unknown source.
  • If you are concerned about a toll or traffic ticket, contact the court or toll agency directly using their official phone number or website.
