AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — A dangerous mix of strong winds, extremely low humidity and dry vegetation is expected to create extremely critical fire danger Thursday across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, prompting a Weather Alert Day.
Widespread critical to extremely critical fire weather conditions are expected, creating an environment where any fire could spread rapidly and become difficult to control. The highest fire danger is expected from noon through 10 p.m.
Communities expected to see some of the most dangerous conditions include Amarillo, Dumas, Borger, Childress, Dalhart, Clovis and Guymon just to name a few.
Wind gusts are forecast to reach 40 to 45 mph throughout the day. Relative humidity is expected to drop as low as 2% to 8% during the afternoon, conditions that can allow fires to ignite easily and spread quickly.
