‘When I walked into Juvenile Hall, I fell in love.’ Ex-gang member helps to prevent others from following in his footsteps

UPLAND, Calif. — Speaking to children at Upland Junior High about the dangers of gang life was not something Brandyn Scotto thought he would ever be doing. That’s because he spent most of his life in and out of prison, and he said it all started at 12 after his grandmother sent him to Juvenile Hall.

“She wanted to give me a wake up call, when I walked into Juvenile Hall, I fell in love,” said Scotto. “There were people just like me, people who did not have parents, people who were broken.”

Scotto explained that around 13 years old, he ended up becoming part of a skinhead gang based in Orange County. He said he was taken away from his parents at a young age because they struggled with drug addiction…
