GPS Tracker Leads Police to Cypress Motel, Errant Vehicle Stop Recovers $13,500 in Stolen Tools

Officers with the Cypress Police Department recently arrested a suspect and recovered more than $13,500 in stolen tools and property yesterday following a commercial vehicle burglary investigation that utilized GPS tracking technology. The arrest stems from a recent spike in vehicle burglaries targeting high-value power tools from work vans.

The investigation escalated after a burglary victim informed police that a GPS tracking device concealed inside a stolen tool bag was actively transmitting a signal from a motel location in Cypress. An officer deployed to the area and initiated surveillance on the premises. During the operation, the officer observed a suspicious vehicle exiting the motel parking lot at a high rate of speed and initiated a traffic stop.

During the roadside contact, the officer observed the tracking victim’s stolen tool bags in plain view on the vehicle’s back seat. A subsequent search of the automobile revealed a large inventory of Milwaukee brand power tools stored within the trunk. Several of the recovered tools featured distinct identifying initials, which investigators successfully cross-referenced with reports filed by other local burglary victims…
