Whittier is going all in on Independence Day this Saturday, starting with a morning flag raising and Freedom Walk at Palm Park and wrapping up with a Fourth of July fireworks spectacular at York Field. City offices, both library branches and community centers will shut down for the holiday weekend beginning Friday, with regular business hours scheduled to return Monday, July 6. Over at York Field, gates open at 5 p.m., fireworks are set to launch at 9 p.m., admission is $5, and veterans and anyone 17 and under get in free. City officials are also reminding everyone that all fireworks are illegal inside Whittier and say violators could be hit with steep penalties.

The City of Whittier calendar has the 4th of July Firework Spectacular set for York Field at 9110 Santa Fe Springs Road. Gates open at 5 p.m., the fireworks show is scheduled for 9 p.m., and the evening lineup includes live music, food trucks and inflatables. Earlier in the day, the Flag Raising & Freedom Walk will take place at Palm Park at 5703 Palm Avenue in the early morning hours of the holiday. Closures, Trash And Transit
According to a post from the Whittier Police Department on Facebook, all municipal facilities – including City Hall, both library locations and community centers – will be closed for the weekend beginning Friday. Regular business hours are set to resume Monday, July 6. The same update notes that residential trash and recycling collections will continue as scheduled, and Athens will provide commercial collection service on Friday for routes that normally fall on Saturday. Savage Canyon Landfill will be closed on Saturday, and the Whittier Cruiser microtransit will not operate on the holiday.

The York Field listing asks attendees to leave pets, barbecues and alcohol at home, and smoking is not allowed on site. Organizers recommend bringing chairs or blankets so you can settle in for the evening. Additional parking with shuttle service will be available starting at 5 p.m. from Sierra Education Center.
