SDG&E’s proposed Golden Pacific Powerlink is a 145-mile, 500-kilovolt transmission line built to move electricity across Southern California and support grid reliability as demand continues to grow. connect SDG&E’s existing Imperial Valley Substation to a new substation near the San Diego-Orange County border, creating a new pathway to move electricity across Southern California. The utility says the project is needed to reduce congestion, improve resilience and help deliver more renewable energy.
The plan has sparked fierce opposition in Temecula, one of the communities considered as part of the potential route. City leaders and residents argue the line would bring massive towers through scenic and rural areas, including near wine country, while offering few, if any, direct benefits to the community. They also warn that it could hurt tourism and raise safety concerns.
The project was identified through the California Independent System Operator’s transmission planning process, and SDG&E says it is needed to strengthen the grid, reduce congestion and improve reliability as California’s electricity demand grows…
