Lifeguards and federal officers have stepped up patrols in Huntington Beach and Seal Beach, where a pair of Olive Ridley sea turtles laid eggs in the sand.
Protective fences and signs warn people to stay out around both nests. Seal Beach Marine Safety Chief Joe Bailey said he’s keeping tabs on the hurricane forecast and the potential for big swells.
“The turtle nest can withstand some water coming up and then leaving, but it can’t withstand sitting water on top of the nest. That would basically ruin the whole situation,” he said. “We’re definitely concerned.”…
