Norte Fire Torches Orange County: 6 Homes Gone, 16,000 Evacuated, 3 Fires Raging

The Briefing:

  • The Norte Fire erupted Friday morning in San Clemente, burned 570 acres with zero containment by nightfall and destroyed at least six homes — all driven by the season’s first powerful Santa Ana wind event to strike Southern California.
  • More than 16,000 residents across San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano were placed under mandatory evacuation orders as the Bryson Fire in Malibu and the Henderson Fire at Camp Pendleton burned simultaneously, stretching regional emergency resources across multiple fronts.
  • Southern California Edison had warned of potential shutoffs for more than 259,000 customers; actual cutoffs Friday affected approximately 70,000 in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, while PG&E implemented similar precautionary measures for up to 70,000 customers in Northern California.

A fast-moving wildfire ignited by the season’s first major Santa Ana wind event tore through populated hillside neighborhoods in southern Orange County on Friday, forcing thousands of families out of their homes, destroying at least six structures and straining emergency systems already stretched across several simultaneous blazes.

Six Homes Destroyed, Zero Containment After Hours of Battle

The Norte Fire ignited around 11:30 a.m. on October 16 near the Portico Del Norte and Eminencia Del Norte area of San Clemente, south of San Juan Capistrano. Fierce offshore gusts and steep chaparral terrain allowed the blaze to expand from a handful of acres to 570 acres within hours — all with zero percent containment by Friday evening, according to the Orange County Fire Authority. Orange County Division 3 Fire Chief Mark Backoff said in a social media video that the terrain and weather together had allowed the fire to outrun early suppression efforts. Aerial news footage captured active flames destroying homes along Via La Mirada in San Juan Capistrano as crews scrambled to slow the advancing front.

No civilians were reported hurt, but two firefighters sustained significant injuries during firefighting operations, fire officials confirmed. Both were transported to area hospitals and were in stable condition Friday night, according to Orange County Fire Authority Chief TJ McGovern. Their identities were not immediately made public.

Mandatory Evacuations Cover 16,000 Residents Across Two Cities

Chief McGovern announced mandatory evacuation orders covering approximately 4,600 homes and 16,000 residents across multiple zones in San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano — including San Juan Zones 4, 5 and 10 and San Clemente Zones 12 and 13. Emergency shelters were activated to receive displaced residents as families scrambled to get out ahead of the wind-driven fire.

The disruption extended well into the school day. The Capistrano Unified School District dismissed students early at several campuses and suspended all after-school programs and athletic events, citing the rapidly changing fire environment and the need to keep local roads open for emergency traffic…
