Four DUI drivers were arrested in coastal OC on Halloween

The Huntington Beach Police Department reported that officers arrested four suspected impaired drivers between Halloween night and the early morning hours that followed. According to police, one driver was found unconscious behind the wheel, while three other suspected DUI drivers crashed into fixed objects, including a light pole and a bus bench. Police emphasized that all four incidents were preventable and renewed calls for motorists to arrange sober transportation during the holiday season.

The photograph released by police appears to show debris scattered across a roadway following one of the crashes, with a damaged sign lying near the curb, illustrating the kind of property damage that often accompanies impaired-driving collisions.

While no injuries were reported in the department’s social media announcement, the incidents underscore the continuing threat posed by impaired drivers throughout Orange County. The California Department of Motor Vehicles’ DUI Management Information System notes that DUI arrests remain a major statewide public safety issue, with arrest data collected from law enforcement agencies across California.

What Charges Could the Drivers Face?

Based on the information released by Huntington Beach police, the suspects could face several potential violations of California law, depending on toxicology results and the circumstances of each crash:

  • Driving With a Blood Alcohol Content of 0.08% or Higher (Vehicle Code §23152(b))
  • Driving Under the Influence of Drugs, including marijuana or prescription medications (Vehicle Code §23152(f))
  • Driving Under the Combined Influence of Alcohol and Drugs (Vehicle Code §23152(g))
  • Property Damage Related Offenses if additional facts warrant
  • Driving on a Suspended License or Other Related Violations if discovered during the investigation

A first-time misdemeanor DUI conviction in California can result in:

  • Up to six months in county jail
  • Fines and penalty assessments that can reach several thousand dollars
  • Three to nine months of DUI education classes
  • A suspended driver’s license
  • Installation of an ignition interlock device

Penalties increase substantially for repeat offenders, drivers with extremely high blood-alcohol levels, or cases involving bodily injury. A DUI causing injury can be prosecuted as either a misdemeanor or felony, with felony cases carrying potential prison sentences.
