Pursuit suspect tried to evade deputies by climbing onto freeway sign closing California’s busy I-5

In a dramatic turn of events earlier today, law enforcement agencies worked in tandem to apprehend a suspect wanted for assault with a deadly weapon. The incident unfolded in East Los Angeles when the suspect, attempting to evade authorities, climbed onto an overcross and onto the ledge of a freeway sign on the I-5.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies initiated the pursuit, tracking the suspect on foot until they reached the elevated structure. Recognizing the potential danger posed by the suspect’s precarious position, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) East Los Angeles office swiftly responded to the scene.

In an effort to ensure the safety of both the suspect and the public, CHP officers took immediate action by temporarily closing lanes on the I-5, the office said. Simultaneously, Los Angeles County firefighters were summoned to provide assistance in managing the delicate situation.

As law enforcement and emergency response teams coordinated their efforts, deputies engaged in dialogue with the suspect, who was perched on the freeway sign ledge, according to the Highway Patrol. The negotiation proved successful as deputies were able to persuade the individual to step down from the precarious position, the CHP said.
