Apple Watch alerts CHP to violent crash in San Bernardino County

At least two people were injured after a car slammed into a palm tree in Ontario early Tuesday morning, and authorities say that collision alert technology was instrumental in helping officers locate and provide aid to the victims.

The crash occurred just before 2 a.m. on the 15 Freeway at Jurupa Avenue and involved a single white Hyundai Sonata with five occupants, law enforcement officials said.

CHP was notified of the collision by the crash detection software on one of the passengers’ Apple Watches, authorities said.

“When officers arrived, they found a single vehicle into a tree,” a CHP spokesperson confirmed to KTLA . “[There were] five parties trapped.”

Two of the patients were transported to a nearby hospital in minor and moderate conditions.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Road crews had cleared the accident scene by 3:45 a.m. Tuesday.
