Three more California counties brace for torrential storm’s brutal impact on Monday

A dire warning has been issued by the National Weather Service as a potent and dangerous storm system takes aim at Southern California, bringing with it the potential for catastrophic flash flooding and life-threatening conditions.

The forecast indicates a strengthening low-pressure system and intense atmospheric river, set to unleash widespread moderate to heavy precipitation across the region over the next several days.

The most severe impacts are expected to unfold overnight through Monday, with Orange, western Riverside, and southwestern San Bernardino Counties bracing for the brunt of the storm’s fury. Residents in these areas are urged to take immediate precautions as the potential for catastrophic flash flooding poses a significant risk to life and property.

The National Weather Service warns of the following hazards:

  • Flash Flooding: The heaviest rainfall is anticipated to trigger flash flooding, particularly in low-lying neighborhoods and areas prone to flooding. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and heed evacuation orders promptly.
  • Rockslides and Mudslides: Canyon roads are at risk of experiencing significant rockslides, while vulnerable areas may witness mudslides and deep debris flows. Recent burn scars are especially susceptible to these hazards.
  • Overflowing Rivers and Creeks: Several creeks and the Ventura River are expected to overflow their banks, posing a risk of drowning for anyone in the vicinity, including those living in unhoused communities and camping areas.
  • Fallen Trees and Power Outages: The storm’s strong winds are forecasted to result in many fallen trees, potentially leading to power outages across the region. Residents are advised to exercise caution and stay indoors if possible.
  • Dangerous Seas: Along the coastline, very large and steep waves are anticipated, making the seas extremely hazardous for marine activities.
