In a recent update from the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) and Metrolink project team, concerns arise as up to 12 inches of soil and debris from a privately owned slope above the track in San Clemente have seeped further into the rail right-of-way. However, reassuringly, the track itself remains stable.
BNSF, duly informed, is scheduled to resume freight train operations through the affected area overnight, albeit at a reduced speed. The project team maintains a vigilant stance, closely monitoring the movement of the slope and drainage, while simultaneously preparing for potential challenges posed by upcoming storms.
In a pivotal development on Friday, Metrolink received a proposal from its contractor suggesting the construction of a barrier wall between the slope and the track. The team is diligently reviewing this proposal, with plans to award a design-build contract early next week. Once this contract is finalized, collaborative efforts will be directed toward exploring the feasibility of resuming limited passenger service at the earliest opportunity. However, as of now, no specific timeline has been established.
