FBI joins investigation into explosion at Tustin shopping center

Firework rocks Tustin shopping center 03:17

A man in his 30s was arrested for lighting off a firework outside a Tustin shopping center on Tuesday.

The explosion happened just before 1:15 p.m. at The Village, near the remains of the historic hangar.

“I was checking the customers then we heard a really loud explosion. I felt it. My check stand is literally by the door,” a grocery store cashier said. “My customers and I ducked … I got so scared. I picked up the phone and called my manager.”

The Tustin Police Department described the explosive as a mortar and a firework. Tustin’s police chief said the explosive could have caused injuries. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

Investigators arrested one man in his 30s for allegedly lighting the firework. It’s unclear why he lit the explosive.

Authorities closed Kensington Park Drive between the Village and Valencia Avenue. The Village shopping center was also closed.
