Newport Beach, Anaheim to crack down on homelessness

Officials in Newport Beach and Anaheim have taken more steps to get more homeless people off the streets.

In Newport Beach, a new anti-camping law will go into effect on Thursday which makes it illegal to camp in the city even without a tent. Those who are seen sleeping on sidewalks or out in public will receive a citation.

One resident told KNX News’ Jon Baird she thinks the new law is great.

“It’s dangerous for them mostly, and they need to be housed,” she said.

Another woman said she thinks there are benefits to the new law.

“But we have to provide alternatives to the homeless,” she said.

“Clean it up but find a place for them,” a man said. “Find a place where they can sleep overnight.”

The city will also add more officers to deal with homeless people. In December, the homeless liaison officer will have three more officers joining them, according to the Los Angeles Times .
