Long Beach warns residents of scammers impersonating city workers

Long Beach officials are warning residents to be aware of scammers impersonating city workers.

The suspects are reportedly knocking on front doors and pretending to be a utility worker. They may offer to test water quality inside the home and will typically show up without a scheduled appointment.

They may also attempt to promote or sell residential water filters, treatment systems or other services to homeowners they’ve targeted, city officials said.

If a person claiming to be a Long Beach Utilities representative shows up, residents can request to see their employee ID.

If still in doubt, homeowners should call Long Beach Utilities at 562-570-2390 and ask to speak with a supervisor for additional verification.

“Long Beach Utilities will never send a representative to a customers’ home to promote/sell residential water filter/treatment systems or offer to test water quality inside their home, without a scheduled appointment,” the city said.
