SANTA ANA, California ( MyCaliforniaNews.com ) — A 43-year-old Anaheim man has been charged with felony gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated after a high-speed police chase resulted in the death of a 67-year-old woman. The pursuit, which began after the suspect allegedly stole Legos from a Fullerton grocery store, reached speeds of nearly 90 miles per hour on surface streets.Anthony Michael Hanzal, of Anaheim, faces additional charges including one felony count of evading a peace officer causing death and one felony count of petty theft with two prior convictions, according to a press release from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. If convicted on all counts, Hanzal could face a maximum sentence of 26 years and four months. He is currently held without bail and is scheduled for arraignment on January 6, 2025, at the North Justice Center in Fullerton. The incident began on December 18, 2024, when an undercover Fullerton police officer observed Hanzal stealing Legos from an Albertsons grocery store. After leaving the store without paying, Hanzal was followed by the officer in an unmarked car. When a marked police vehicle attempted a traffic stop, Hanzal fled, leading to a chase that involved multiple police departments.During the pursuit, Hanzal allegedly rear-ended a vehicle at a red light before entering the 91 freeway and exiting at Knott Avenue in Buena Park. The chase continued through La Palma, where Hanzal reportedly ran a red light at the intersection of La Palma Avenue and Moody Street, colliding with a vehicle driven by 67-year-old Marianne Mildred Casey, who was killed instantly. The crash’s impact pushed both vehicles into other cars, injuring additional bystanders. Hanzal is accused of being under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident.”Enough is enough,” stated Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer. “Actions have consequences, and I am mad as hell that an elderly woman is dead because a drug-addicted repeat thief decided to steal Legos from a grocery store and then lead multiple police agencies on a high-speed chase through Orange County in the middle of the day.”Deputy District Attorney Devin Campbell of the Homicide Unit is prosecuting the case.
