California School Districts Issue Thousands of Layoff Warnings As Budgets Run Dry

School districts across California are once again issuing layoffs to address budget shortfalls caused by declining enrollment, expiring federal Covid relief funds, and stagnant state funding. According to the California Teachers Association, over 2,300 school employees have already received preliminary layoff notices, with most going to credentialed staff such as teachers, school nurses, and librarians.

More than 2,000 pink slips have been issued statewide, impacting various districts. California law requires that potential layoffs be communicated by March 15 each year, though many notices are rescinded by May 15, the final date to confirm layoffs for tenured teachers. Critics argue this annual process damages morale and disrupts school operations.
