Coconut Songs and Community: OCC kicks off AANHPI Heritage Month with ukulele workshop

Orange Coast College’s AANHPI team brought the sounds and tastes of the Polynesian, Micronesian, and Melanesian islands to students on May 7 with a ukulele “learn-to-play” workshop.

The event took place in Watson Hall, and provided students with their own ukulele for the session and foods such as Spam musubi and fruit jelly cups.

The ukulele teacher, Victor Thompson, started the workshop with an overview of some islands of Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia. He then transitioned into teaching students the song “Coconut Woman” by Harry Belafonte, who comes from Jamaican heritage (a country in the Caribbean Sea)…
