A Tulare County couple has been convicted of felony child abuse and endangerment after subjecting their infant son to extreme heat and cold and withholding proper nutrition, leaving the boy permanently disabled.
John Andres Gonzalez, 38, and Jaqueline Navarro, 45, were each found guilty on July 2 of one felony count of child abuse and endangerment and one felony enhancement for causing great bodily injury to a child under 5.
The couple, who follow naturopathic and extreme vegan beliefs — they considered themselves “vegan mucus-free fruitarians,” according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office — faces up to 12 years in state prison.
