A California woman was struck and killed by a garbage truck in Orange County on Wednesday, decapitating her just after 7 a.m. as she attempted to cross the street in a residential neighborhood.
Maria Rubalcava de Ruesga, 69, was crossing West Bishop Street when she was hit by the garbage truck, Santa Ana police said. Children and families present at the nearby Pio Pico Elementary School witnessed the accident. The Santa Ana Unified School District subsequently deployed a crisis team to provide them and school leaders with support.
The garbage driver reportedly cooperated with investigators and remained at the scene, where de Ruesga was pronounced dead, police said.
