Married downtown L.A. precious metals dealers plead guilty to hiding millions in cash from IRS

A married couple who operated precious metals businesses in downtown Los Angeles’ Jewelry District have pleaded guilty to federal charges stemming from a yearslong scheme to conceal more than $127 million in cash transactions from the Internal Revenue Service.

Alex Nguyen, 50, and his wife, Sam Nguyen, 52, both of Irvine, along with one of their companies, Newport Gold Post Inc., admitted this week to conspiracy charges related to failing to report large cash transactions, not maintaining required anti-money laundering safeguards, and using unreported cash for personal and business expenses, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
