A potentially historic and powerful winter storm is set to push through the Santa Clarita Valley through Christmas Day, bringing heavy rain, flooding, damaging winds and even the possibility of a small tornado.
The storm, driven by a strong atmospheric river, is expected to arrive in two distinct waves beginning late Tuesday and continuing through Christmas Day, according to Rich Thompson, a Meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
“This is a very strong atmospheric river impacting the area through Christmas Eve and Christmas Day,” Thompson said. “It’s going to be very, very wet for the Santa Clarita Valley.”

The first round of rain is expected to move into the region Tuesday and intensify throughout the night, delivering what forecasters say will be the most intense rainfall of the storm. After a brief break from the downpour on Christmas eve, a second round of heavy rain is forecasted to arrive on Christmas Day.
