Strong Santa Ana winds return to Southern California; rain likely by New Year’s Day

Southern California is heading into a familiar winter weather pattern this week, with sunny skies and strengthening Santa Ana winds followed by a return to rain around the New Year, according to KTLA’s Kacey Montoya.

While skies remain mostly clear Sunday and Monday, winds are expected to ramp up later Sunday afternoon and evening, with the strongest gusts developing overnight into Monday morning. Wind speeds could reach 45 to 50 mph in typical Santa Ana wind corridors, including mountain passes, interior valleys and desert-facing communities.

A wind advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday, after which it transitions into a high wind watch beginning at 10 p.m. Affected areas include the I-5 and Highway 14 corridors, the mountains, the Inland Empire and parts of Orange County.
