New self-checkout law comes with fines of up to $1,000 for unsuspecting businesses

A California city is poised to introduce new self-checkout regulations that could affect both shoppers and stores.

Costa Mesa, located in Orange County, California, is taking initial action to put in place new requirements mandating additional staff at area grocery and pharmacy outlets to monitor self-checkout areas.

On Tuesday, Jan. 20, the Costa Mesa City Council gave preliminary approval in a narrow 3-2 vote to a new local measure, mandating at least one employee for every three self-checkout stations and imposing a 15-item or less restriction, along with additional provisions.
