Whittier settles suit alleging young Explorers were abused by officers for $3.5 million

Four former female Whittier Police Explorers who accused former police officers of sexually abusing them will receive a $3.5-million settlement from the city, an attorney for the women announced Wednesday.

Anthony DeMarco, an attorney who helped secure a settlement of more than $7 million with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles for priest sex crime victims, said the city of Whittier’s lawyers agreed to the settlement Wednesday, shortly before the first of the two former Explorers’ cases was set to go to trial. Two other alleged victims have also sued the city, he said.

In a statement Wednesday evening, the city said it is “currently working to resolve lawsuits filed by six plaintiffs who allege misconduct by former police officers in the 1970s and early 1980s, during their involvement in the City’s Police Department Explorer Program.”…
