UCI Health to Cut 150 Jobs in Orange County

UCI Health announced Monday that it will eliminate about 150 positions, roughly 1% of its workforce, in a strategic restructuring meant to redirect resources toward core clinical services. The reductions are concentrated in administrative and back-office roles across the system’s Orange County hospitals and clinics, and system leaders say patient-facing care will be protected as the reorganization moves forward.

In a news release, UCI Health said the realignment will allow it “to sustainably operate at scale” and to focus on primary care, surgical services, and specialty treatment options, according to the Los Angeles Times. President and CEO Chad Lefteris added, “We approach this moment with respect and care, feeling deeply grateful for our co-workers’ vital contributions to our community and those we serve,” the paper reported.

UCI’s Footprint After Rapid Growth

The system operates UCI Medical Center in the city of Orange and the newly opened, all-electric UCI Health — Irvine acute care campus, and it expanded last year through the purchase and rebranding of four community hospitals. UC Irvine’s Office of the Chancellor notes the 2024 acquisitions in Fountain Valley, Lakewood, Los Alamitos, and Placentia, which added thousands of staff and extended the system’s regional reach. UCI Health’s newsroom says the clinical enterprise now serves roughly 5.6 million people across Orange County, western Riverside County, and southeast Los Angeles County.

What The System Says It Will Protect

UCI Health’s statement said the realignment will “unify functions” and direct dollars to mission-critical areas, but it did not list specific departments or timing for reductions. The release cited a mix of financial headwinds, including changes in federal funding, as drivers of the decision, according to the Los Angeles Times. System officials said they will attempt to work with impacted employees as transitions are implemented.
