Newport Beach – Two competitive cyclists endured a frightening encounter with aggressive motorists during a training ride along the Pacific Coast Highway. The incident, captured on video and shared widely online, highlighted tensions between drivers and bike lane users in the coastal community. Police responded decisively, leading to one arrest and the impoundment of a luxury vehicle as evidence.[1][2]

A Routine Ride Turns Perilous

On March 21, cyclists Luke Fetzer and Ben Byra pedaled steadily in the designated bike lane near Bayshore Drive, preparing for an upcoming race. What began as a standard training session quickly escalated when occupants of two vehicles began harassing them. Drivers swerved toward the pair, honked aggressively, and tailgated at dangerously close distances.[1]

Ben Byra later described the BMW staying mere inches from his rear wheel, forcing him onto the sidewalk to avoid collision. A passenger hurled a water bottle at the cyclists, while slurs rang out from the cars. In response, Fetzer sprayed water toward one vehicle out of frustration. The harassment peaked further down the road, where occupants exited their cars and attempted to block or confront the cyclists speeding downhill at 30 to 40 miles per hour.[2][3]

A blue BMW M3 emerged as the primary aggressor, with its driver steering perilously near the cyclists in the bike lane. Police later identified the operator as Samir Weiss of Corona.
