Experts speak up about e-bike rules, impacts

Speak Up Newport held their monthly meeting on April 8 with featured speakers Newport Beach Police Department Officer Zach Varela and local attorney Paul Meyer. People filled the community room and watched online via a Zoom livestream.

Varela explained that the state has assigned class one and class two e-bikes to have a maximum speed of 20 mph and class three a maximum of 28 mph. Riders aged 17 and younger must wear a helmet for class one and two. A rider needs to be at least 16 years old (a driver’s license is not required) and a helmet is required (regardless of age) to ride a class three e-bike.
