School board bans e-bikes for lower grades, allows at high schools

Getting to school will look a little different for many local students next year, as the Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) Board of Education last week banned electric bikes for lower grades. The board opted to allow e-bikes (of all classes) for high school students.

Board members voted 6-1 (Ashley Anderson dissented) on April 21 for the new policy. Student board member Jeremy Lohr also voted against the item.

The new language states that it is strictly prohibited for elementary and middle school students to possess or operate e-bikes on school property, including the periphery of campus or parked on campus…
