Person fatally crushed while digging under Santa Ana bridge

A person attempting to dig a tunnel beneath a bridge in Santa Ana on Tuesday was found dead after being crushed by falling debris, officials said.

Orange County Fire Authority personnel were initially called to a confined space rescue on the 2100 block of West 17th Street around 8:30 a.m., but the operation later shifted to a body recovery, OCFA Capt. Barta told KTLA.

Barta said the victim, who was not part of any construction crew, was digging beneath the bridge when concrete and debris suddenly gave way and collapsed.

An Urban Search and Rescue team was dispatched to the scene to recover the body. No information about the victim’s identity was immediately released…
