On the eve of its annual conference in Anchorage, the Alaska Oil and Gas Association (AOGA) announced the individuals and companies honored with the 2026 AOGA Industry Awards. The professional trade association is giving out four awards, two recognizing organizations for outstanding performance and two individuals: a rising star making early impact in the industry and a person who has made a career of industry support.
An Obvious Pikka
Santos wins the AOGA Project of the Year for Environmental Stewardship and Innovation for how it achieved first oil from Pikka Phase 1. AOGA says the project represents a new generation of North Slope development, combining advanced engineering and technology with environmental stewardship and community collaboration. As the first major development targeting the Nanushuk reservoir, Pikka incorporates a compact, single-pad design and an ultra-Extended Reach Drilling program that allows Santos to reach resources beneath and beyond sensitive areas while minimizing the project’s surface footprint.
Santos operates Pikka jointly with Spanish energy company Repsol. The project was designed for net-zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions on an equity-share basis from first oil, using measures including centralized power generation with waste heat recovery, electrified facilities, zero routine flaring, and methane leak detection technology. Working with Nuiqsut residents and Kuukpik Corporation, Santos made modifications including relocating the drill site one mile farther from the Colville River, narrowing road widths, supporting a new community boat launch and upgrading Nuiqsut’s wastewater treatment infrastructure. Pikka also introduces North Slope innovations including ultra-filtration and sulfate removal technology at its seawater treatment plant, which previously won an AOGA award for Cruz Construction in 2024.
