ANCHORAGE, AK (Alaska’s News Source) – Hurricane force winds have been slamming into the Aleutians today, as a strong Bering Sea Low continues to deepen. Storm impacts remain the same, with high winds, heavy rain, and some coastal flooding still a concern. While the greatest impacts will remain for Southwest Alaska, we will see rain and gusty winds move east into Southcentral by weeks end.
SOUTHCENTRAL:
Our sunny days are coming to an end, as cloud cover is quickly streaming back into Southcentral. While we’ll still maintain dry conditions for most areas, light rain showers are already impacting areas of Kodiak and through Prince William Sound. We’ll continue to hold onto thicker cloud coverage to close out the week, with rain and winds set to increase for most areas. While we aren’t under any weather alerts for Southcentral, be prepared for some gusty winds to move into Southcentral as we head through the night and into the weekend. Peak winds for many areas will occur by mid-morning and last into the evening hours, before winds gradually subside into Saturday. Winds will be highest along the Anchorage Hillside and Turnagain Arm, where gusts up to 55 mph will be possible. Anchorage and lower parts of the Matanuska Valley will see gusts of 25 to 35 mph, although some gusts up to 40 mph will be possible. While heavy rain remains for coastal areas, light rain will hold off for many inland locations until this weekend. The only exception will be Turnagain Arm and the Hillside, which will see the rain arriving through the day Friday.
