After receiving numerous reports of bears breaking into garages and vehicles, Fish and Game biologists are confident they have located the wildlife responsible for the damage: humans.
Last Thursday, the state announced a sweeping set of regulations and initiatives meant to control human misbehavior, including the appointment of a new Human Control Officer (HCO).
“Irresponsible humans are luring these bears in with the sweet smell of car upholstery and RV tires,” said state biologist Evan Richardson. “Really, the human population up here is out of control. We need strict limits on what humans are allowed to do on the Hillside, lest they lead more pure, innocent bears into temptation with outrageous activities like having pets, kids, or food. Our number one priority here at Fish and Game is keeping our delicate bears safe from unnatural trespassing humans.”
“Humans are smart, but unpredictable,” added a representative of the Municipality of Anchorage. “We’re working with the state on rules that will make it easier for humans to share this amazing space with as many bears as possible. For one, we believe that no homes east of Lake Otis should be allowed to store or cook food indoors. Irresponsible food ownership is a leading driver of human-bear problems.”…
