Major Crash on Alaska Highway Involves 37 Cars With 13 Hurt

None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening, according to state troopers

A major Alaskan highway was closed for hours on Thursday after a series of crashes collected 37 vehicles and injured more than a dozen people, according to a local media report.

The first crashes on the Glenn Highway, which runs between Anchorage and Glenallen, were first reported around 10:30 a.m. after a vehicle lost traction on the icy roadway and crashed into the car in front, according to Alaska Public Media.

The highway was initially closed in both directions due to the multiple crashes. Northbound lanes reopened by 1:15 p.m., while the highway had fully reopened by 2:15 p.m.

“There was dense fog at the time of the collision, with only one vehicle-length of visibility,” Alaskan state troopers said in an online dispatch . “Nearly a dozen vehicles continued to collide with the initially involved vehicles. With the limited visibility, additional vehicles then began a chain reaction of rear-end collisions, in trying to avoid hitting one another.”
